ATAVON® Tablets contain Atovaquone, a potent anti-protozoal medication widely used in veterinary medicine. It is the drug of choice for the treatment of Babesia gibsoni infection in dogs and Cytauxzoon felis infection in cats. Due to its unique mechanism of action, Atovaquone is especially effective in resistant and mixed protozoal infections and is commonly used in combination therapy.

Each uncoated tablet contains:

  • Atovaquone USP – 250 mg

Indications / Uses

  • Treatment of Babesia gibsoni infection in dogs

  • Treatment of Cytauxzoon felis infection in cats

  • Management of Atovaquone-resistant Babesia infections

  • Mixed haemoprotozoan infections including:

    • Ehrlichia canis

    • Anaplasma spp.

    • Babesia canis


Dosage

For Babesia gibsoni & Cytauxzoon felis:

  • 13.4 mg/kg body weight, three times daily (t.i.d.) for 10 days

  • Must be given along with Azithromycin (Macrozee)
    @ 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 10 days

Approximate Dose:

  • 1 tablet (250 mg) for a 20 kg dog

Always follow the veterinarian’s prescription for accurate dosing.


Recommended Combination Protocols

  • Atovaquone 13.4 mg/kg + Proguanil 5 mg/kg, once daily

  • Atovaquone + Azithromycin 10 mg/kg, once daily for 10 days

  • Imidocarb Dipropionate @ 6.6 mg/kg (oral/IM) on Day 1 and Day 14

  • Artesunate @ 12.5 mg/kg orally for 10 days (for severe mixed and resistant tick fever infections)


Pharmacodynamics

Atovaquone is a highly lipophilic ubiquinone analogue.
ATAVON® works by selectively inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport in protozoa, leading to disruption of ATP production and pyrimidine biosynthesis, ultimately causing protozoal death—especially effective against Babesia gibsoni.


Directions for Use

  • Always administer with a fatty diet to enhance absorption

  • If used with Azithromycin:

    • Give Azithromycin on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning

  • Do not skip doses; complete the full treatment course


Side Effects

  • Difficulty in swallowing

  • Skin itching or redness

  • Blistering or loosening of skin

  • Very rarely: increased heart rate

Discontinue use and consult a veterinarian if severe reactions occur.


Precautions

  • No specific contraindications reported for pregnant or young animals

  • Use strictly under veterinary supervision

  • Combination therapy is essential to prevent resistance
